Wiring Plans for TD5 90

Finally got permission to start modifying our Defender 90 CSW for a long trip.

I'ld like to start with the electrics (improved security, deep cycle battery, 12V power sockets, external charge, etc.).

Any ideas where I can get wiring diagrams from? Haynes don't seem to have an up-to-date book and popping into my local dealer just got me a lecture about manufacturer's warrenties (Cheers Farnell Guisley - Its a Land Rover by the way).

Any suggestions for sources of components would also be appreciated.

Finally, this will be my first automotive electrical work! I understand the principles but advice, recommendations, or the title of a good book on the subject would be helpful.

Cheers

BJ

I'll get the fire extinguisher...

I'll also run a mile from anything with as much electronics in it as a Td5. Much easier on my prehistoric carb powered V8...

Don't bother... With a TD5, the computer will need waking up to tell it that it has new equipment fitted, such as a towbar, radio, elctric windows etc. Until it is told that equipment is fitted, the circuit is supposed to be dead.

If the computer detects something that it doesn't recognise, it can isolate the circuit to "protect" the vehicle and the computer.

This came from 2 different technicians who work in different garages, one a main dealer and one an independent specialist, but certainly does fit in with what I have heard about the TD5

I have a student working with me at the moment. He has sucessfully installed a TD5 engine into a 1988 90. He had very few problems in doing so and the task proved how many myths have been told about the electronics on the TD5 engine. The worst culprits for mis information are the Land Rover dealers themselves - their knowledge is pathetic.

If you want to do any mods to the electrics I suggest that you get hold of the relevant Rave CD. These have all the information that you require (although there are some errors on the wiring diagrams apparently). Without this he couldn't have completed the job.

I fail to be impressed by people who have no interest in modern technology :-)

There's a time and a place for electronics. The place is in a shiny machine room and not in something you intend to fill with mud and water ;)

There is probably some slight truth in this. I've been told (or read) that the electric windows in my Td5 are controlled by the computer, so extra switches can't be fitted, but a radio; this sounds like a statement designed to stop folk replacing the standard simple radio with a decent one.

I've used an external charger on my Td5's standard battery for months without problems.

I will be connecting leisure batteries to my Td5, with charging from the alternator and solar panels and a wind generator. How will the computer know that more batteries are connected and how will it disconnect them? How will it know about more security devices?

I bought a Land Rover YAE 100800 Tachometer from my local franchised dealer, who then told me that his service department could not fit it (they could before I placed the order!) and gave me the phone number of an auto-electrical company.

So much for so called fully trained LR technicians!

But I would also like some wiring diagrams.

Alan.
