is it necessary to put chains on a 4x4?

I have an 03 RX300 with the Bridgestone Dueller Tires that aren't known to be particularly good in snow. Last winter and this winter, I've had no problems at all. The RX is wonderful in snow. It scares me though when the anti-lock brakes kick in (prematurely I feel) on icy roads.
