1995 Corsa 1.2i Petrol - Camshaft Flywheel

Having a go at changing the head gasket on my Corsa, thought I'd change the timing belt at the same time (someone before me has also cut away most of the rear of the timing belt cover so that will have to be replaced too!). Having prblems getting the flyweel off though, the one that the aux drive belt attatches to.



According to the Hanyes manual putting it into top gear and making sure the brakes are applied will hold it sufficiently to be loosened. Well not for me! When the above conditions are met it still has a fair amount of give in it and doesn't feel like it's going to give.



Does anyone have any tips for getting it off?

i think you mean the crank shaft pulley, you shouldnt be touching the flywheel ! they arnt normaly a pig to get off, only the jap stuff is tight as they are done up 200 newton grunts !

Sorry just checked in the manual, yes I should have wrote crankshaft pulley!

First gear would be better. or Expose the flywheel teeth and jam them with a screwdriver. or Or since the head is off , you could drop something in a cylinder and use a bar across the top held down by head bolts and spacers, when you try to turn the pulley the piston will rise and jam against the bar, so locking the crankshaft. or Personally I would use an air impact wrench.

I'm confused. The flywheel is at the other end of the engine from the timing belt, surely? So do you mean a pulley? And on the crank or camshaft?

Assuming you mean the bottom pulley not the flywheel[1] then put a long handled socket wrench on it (slip a bit of pipe over the handle if needed), rest it on the floor and blip the starter.

[1] I know it /looks/ like a small flywheel, but it's probably a torsional vibration damper - you'll see a rubber layer between the core and the outer.

?. If trying to lock the crankshaft, the higher the gear the better. Unless the clutch slips, obviously.

I agree, BUT if you actually try this out in top you find that the gearbox takes a while to 'wind up' till the pulley is 'locked' enough to undo, in a lower gear you only have to twist the pulley a bit for it to 'lock' enough to undo the bolts. (which is what the OP was asking about)

Yes, but.

At that point you have quite a bit of mechanical advantage through to the roadwheels and it's quite possible to beat the handbrake.

So best of both worlds: try it in first, then move up the gears if it's too tight to work like that.

Then hit it with a sledge like you should have in the first place ;-)

By one of those strange co-incidences I picked yesterday to change cambelt on the newly aquired Hyundai Coupe ( as previously mentioned on NG )

Struggling a bit with crankshaft pulley, so came in for a coffee & a re-read of this thread, then went out & put it in top gear, rather than first, came undone with only a breaker bar, brilliant, thanks to all.

Oddly enough in regard to the cambelt change, whilst I found the timing mark beside the crankshaft pulley and the one on the camshaft pulley, I didn't find the corresponding marks for these, so I did what my predecessor had done and made my own with tippex. It does though pose the question of what to do if the belt comes off......

If the gearbox is 'winding up' it and the engine are simply moving on their rubber mounts - which is a function of the torque applied to the bolt you're trying to undo.

Should add it might also be the springs in the clutch driven plate compressing - if it has any.
