My 2.1td 406 seems to keep reving up at traffic lights etc. all on it's own, the revs just seem to go up and down. I am totally confused, is oil leaking from the turbo or something.

possibly, bypass it and see if the problem is the same. other possibilities are over full of oil or air leaks in the fuel system, I had a transit diesel that did this when it was about to run out of diesel and was picking up air and fuel.

That 2.1 in the XM uses a fuel heater which is notorious for airleaks. On one end of the head, IIRC.
I went to a diesel specialist with a 2.1 406 and he said "sell it!"
