mondeo diesel problem!!

Hi all, My Mondeo Turbo diesel 1.8 has developed a problem. when the car gets hot ie in traffic jams it starts to rattle and when I touch the accellerator the engine revs up on its own sometimes so high I have to switch off the engine!! other times coming up on the clutch solves the problem.. It has revved at

6000 revs and put the rev counter needle up to max on 2 occasions! The car otherwise seems ok.. stillgetting good mpg and losing no oil or water! Has anyone else had a similar problem or have any advice as to what it could be!! Thanks in advance for any help Dave

Sounds like you may have an air leak, or your pump has got a broken spring inside.

Mondeo's have a vacuum solenoid at the front of the injector pump which acts upon the turbo wastegate. It is attached by a rubber hose to a steel hose....... the problem is that the diaphragm busts on the pump side allowing diesel to get into the engine via the turbocharger and can cause the engine to race....... Check the oil level...... if it is bust the oil will be "thin" and away above the max mark..... you can block this hose at the inj pump and drain and fill with oil and filter then..... it has an effect on the performance of the car but it will run 75% OK without it...... or weigh up the repair cost (£300) against the performance loss.
