Audi dual mass flywheels ?

Why is an Audi A4 clutch change apparently so expensive, and why is the flywheel (of all things) apparently now a consumable part? Anyone got any hands-on with these things?

I've read an article on them. The flywheel is now in two parts with a spring coupling between the two. It acts in conjunction with the springs in the clutch plate and further smooths out vibration. Apparently the coupling can break up or at least lose efficiency after high mileage so a change is reccomended. Not sure I'd bother given the price, but then again, how much to drop the gearbox out again?

Very old dual mass flywheels can give irse to juddering but if you don't have a problem you can take the risk and leave it in. I'm sure most people do.

Flywheels have always been consumable to a certain extent as the clutch can wear out or damage the friction surface.
