May have to modify the chassis. And maybe a new exhaust system.

Given that the crank weighs 330t, does this thing need a flywheel?
I don't remember one, the 12 cylinder 2 stroke is probably more the reason though, there's always positive turning moment.
Must have a flywheel. Where else are you going to put the ring gear for the starter to engage?
Wonder how you start this thing. I assume it must have cylinder decompressors otherwise cranking it over the top compression would be quite something.

Compressed air, usually. Pushes the pistons down so that others come up.

No starter motor, you crank it over with compressed air.
There's some sort of gear on the nose of the crank, connected to an huge electric motor by the looks of it, but I suspect that's more for inching the engine round during maintenance than for starting it.

It was somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the drugs began to take hold. I remember Chris Street saying something like:
On the pics I saw of the Sulzer 10 cyl, there's a relatively small flywheel with ring gear attached.
With diesel locomotives, where an engine powers a generator it was common to motor the generator to start the engine.... not possible with the advent of alternators into locomotives now.
