Most of the purple headlights I've seen have been really dim - almost like sidelights but coloured. I've assumed from the light pattern that it's headlights behind - but perhaps it really is sidelights.

They sure ain't an aid to visibility - I've only ever really noticed 'em on the other side of the road. Well, actually, I've only ever seen 'em on /my/ side of the road heading straight at me. This unscientific survey leads me to suspect they're probably fitted by the legendary Kawasaki riders - the ones with six braincells.

It's a standard response from a driver in the wrong "I didn't see it" regardless of bike, car or pedestrian etc. But a bike being smaller is easier hidden behind other road users. And the fact that they're usually going too fast doesn't help either.

It would be more to the point if the majority of bikers didn't act like prats.

Actually, I'm fairly sure there isn't a law saying that we drive on the left. Failure to do so may well leave you open to prosecution for all sorts of other things, but not IIRC directly for driving/riding on the wrong side.

As for usenet being a text only medium, well, "Authority" isn't really something usenet does terribly well, but if you don't mind taking advice instead of being bullish and annoying people, then search for "netiquette" and see how many suggest that you don't post html.

It's a question of locale and/or perception surely? *My* impression of the local biking fraternity is that they're mostly sensible and considerate riders. The use of the main lamp is I think more than acceptable (note: not full beam) - and certainly helps me identify them within a grey anonymous mass of traffic, tarmac and buildings.

To be fair, the ones that *do* appear to be idiots (too close, wrong road position, taking stupid risks) are moped riders of indeterminate age / sex.

Nearer to topic: biggest effing bugbear for me is the amount of knobs that park on the nearside facing oncoming traffic with headlamps still on - oblivious to the blindspot they're causing due to glare: downright annoying at night, and lethal in poor weather. Seems to be common practice, mores the pity.

Together with the purple visor, things look normal.
