All the best, Angus Manwaring. (for e-mail remove ANTISPEM)

I appreciate the non aggressive and layman explanation. There's a few people who could do well following your example.

Round this part of London the majority are yobs on small bikes, pizza delivery drivers and scooter types. Non of which give a toss for other road users. They appear to be those forced to be on two wheels through age, cost or convenience - not through choice. The old fashioned decent biker is rare.

Try doing a search on how to post to Usenet...

No it is not, the law only says on what side you should pass, unless 'told' to do otherwise or when not to drive on the right-hand side of the road. There is no prohibition on driving on the right-hand side of the road as such.

Wow -

so, before you are allowed to post to newsgroups, you have to be

Aware there is a convention

Realise you are breaking it

Develop new skills to get the right computer settings

I for one - and I use computers all day and every day, and write software as well - simply can't be bothered. Home computers are sold as, and used by the vast majority of people as, domestic appliances - which is all to the good.

I wouldn't walk around an autojumble naked, any more than I'd go swimming in my oily jeans.

You soon get told, usually nicely, and most people then do the decent thing and adapt to the rules in play, or go elsewhere.

Most people, if they don't know how to follow the rules, ask, and get plenty of friendly advice on how to sort it all out.

Which sets you aside from the people willing to learn and make the effort, and turns you into a top posting f****it.

HTH

Yup that's about the size of it. Top posting too, that's also irritating.

Good job this is a relatively friendly group.

Hmm what shall I put in your tea on Saturday?

General highways act of 1773 contained a 'keep left;' recommendation. This became a law as part of the highways bill in 1835.. RTA Law 1988 sections 2 and 3 as ammended by RTA 1991 would probably have you for driving on anything but the left.

There are some, the ones who insist on filtering on the M4 when the traffic's already doing 50+ for instance.

Can't say I've ever noticed to be honest.

I've only ever been dazzled when it's at night - and their supposed to have their lights on anyway. Personally I wouldnt ride a bike - unless it was fitted with industrial strength landing lights from a 747.

The message from "Malc" contains these words:

Bugger - I'd forgotten that! You must admit though, in the late 70s it was the stereotype of a Kawa rider.

There's never been a campaign to encourage full beam by anyone. Are you thinking about the campaign suggesting people dip their lights?

Not allowed, no. Just a good idea.

Yes. There are conventions everywhere. Do you piss on the carpet?

Easy enough - you get told them quick enough. Like not top posting, as you are doing here.

You can't use the options on a computer prog already? Then you should definitely learn.

You *write* software, but can't operate a computer? Who do you work for - the IR?

Have a look at some of these - they may help.

30 years later (today is, believe it or not, my birthday) after a huge number of BMWs, AJSs, Moto Guzzis, Hondas, Suzis, and a couple of Yams I've got a GT 550 (never despatched). :-)

Blimey - the killfile's never seen so much activity in one day!

No. Most bikers don't use full beam. They do use dipped beam in daytime. It's a requirement during the test and is also required during training to encourage continued use.

require learners on CBT to use dipped headlights or daytime runninglights, and during the practical test.

Daytime Running LightsIt is been suggested that motorcyclists should be required to usetheir headlights during the day in order to increase their conspicuityand hence reduce accidents. Lighting Regulations currently permit, butdo not require, the use of daytime running lights by any vehicle, notjust motorcycles. However, research into daytime running lights hasproduced contradictory results, and there are indications thatheadlamps on many motorcycles may be inadequate. This suggests thatthere would be little benefit in motorcycles using their normalheadlights during the day. Specifically designed daytime runninglights (separate from the normal headlights) may be more effective. Maybe like ROSPA a number of bikers have found that use of dipped beam is inadaquate and that FULL BEAM is the only way to penertate the cocoon of unawareness that the average car driver sits in. Unfortunately the car driver responds by wiping them out anyway with the excuse that "I couldn't see him officer, he was dazzling me". I think that use of a translucent cover or scattering lens (like the ones in indicators) would be more effective by producing a large bright frontal aspect to the bike that can be seen from a wide range of angles rather than the limited directional nature of a normal headlamp.
