Do these car mags talk crap? Eg Honda Prelude anti lock brakes can fail 1k fix it says

Do these car mags (the likes of Parkers, What Car, Honest John etc) often talk s**te? I sometimes wonder when I read some of the articles in these magazines. Utter nonsense some of the things I read.

Am reading about pros and cons of Honda Prelude 97-01 in What Car price guide. It says anti locks brakes can fail 1k fix. Is this really true? 1k fix where? Honda Main dealer? Reasonable price second hand but I dont fancy 1k fix. Probably only a couple of hundred at a cheap place?

Honda NSX, needs servicing every 6k and costs over 1k?

Honda Shuttle - Anti lock brakes may require new pump at £1400???

Often

Probably the ABS pump - 600 quid part on the Volvo S80, also a common failure. They're available reconditioned or you can have yours repaired but a dealer will charge 1hr or more for diagnosis, and 2-3 hrs for fitting so yes, 1000 quid repair.

IIRC it's true, but Honda dealers are known for expensive charges - servicing bills on our accord were 250 / 450 and that was a good few years ago. As for the NSX I think they charged more because they could.

See above comment.

Probably the ABS pump and the new price at a dealer. Most mags don't recommend secondhand safety related parts. There are specialists who recondition ABS units, though.

But surely you could buy the part from a motor factors or even the main dealer if you have to and then get a cheaper garage to fit the part? Would ABS pumps be available at a motor factors like Part Co or would it be a dealer only part?
