Door Lock Won't Open

Jun 12, 2008 3 Replies

Any lock experts out there? I have been trying to get the lock on the back door of my van open for a few days. I've oiled it, put grease on the key and worked it in, but it will not open. Its the type with the key barrel in the handle. The barrel twists about 70 degrees and the handle had free play like it does when locked, but the key will not trun the full 90 degrees it need to open. All feels normal when wiggling the key in the lock and key goes in easily. The van has been sitting for a fair while and I thought it would just need some greasing, but been trying for days by wiggling key in lock with grease. Any thoughts?

Take the interior panels off and manually release the lock. If they're half open then you normally can't get them to open any further without relocking them. But it varies from van to van. Without knowing which one it's rather difficult to help.

Sorry. Its a 1987 VW LT35.

Unfortunately the internal door panel is tight against the interious furniture, so can't get access to back of lock. Still trying though.
