Escort 1.8TD (99) smoking and running problem

Oct 20, 2003 3 Replies

I have a problem with my 1999 Escort 1.8TD estate, a couple of weeks ago it started giving me problems. It intermittently feels like its not idling properly and also judders when slowing down to say 30 (like kangaroo starts) It also , when playing up , pours out large amounts of blue smoke , smells like unburnt diesel. I have had it serviced at the garage and they couldn't find a problem .They thought at first maybe some bad diesel but I have filled up numerous times since the problem started , they now suspect maybe cambelt and pump belt , this will cost me approx £160 but obviously I am a bit worried in case this isn't the problem .Does it sound like this could be the problem ?

Thanks Jim

Well no-one replied so I thought I'd let you know what the problem was

Took it into engine specialist with all the ECU equipment , turns out that car had gone into limp home mode , because the electronic valve inside the pump has gne faulty Bottom line cost £90 for diagnosis £100 labour and £100 for the valve :(

Jim

When went to pick it up different story !!!! £90 diags £100 valve £180 labour Vat on top !!!!

£434 !!!!!!!!

Now I'm broke :(

Jim,

I'm having a similiar problem on my S plate mondeo turbo diesel. Valve in the fuel pump you say, do you know if it requires dismantling the pump? I posted a similiar message some time ago.

I take it that the idle was a bit rough (like it was missing) and as you say the vehicle was very jerky to drive when changing down/up in low gears?

I'm going to look into it myself. Thanks for the feedback.

Matthew
