Is GAP insurance on a new car a good idea or just another rip off?

Many insurances are new for old on a new car for the 1st 12 months....
My opinion? I think it may be worth it if you are a 'high risk' driver but possibly not otherwise. I was offered it a few cars ago when I bought from a dealer - the car was expensive, the finance (and charges) moreso so I really didn't want to add to yet someone else making more money out of me!
I left it unpaid but I'm sure some people have made it worth the money - but it only enables you to walk away from the finance - you'll not make any profit from it.

Not quite so, my girlfriend has GAP insurance a few years back she had a Clio Y reg , unfortunately the car got written off, I was dubious about the GAP insurance, she got back a good amount as she then purchased a 52 Corsa without her original finance being affected.
A friend of mine has worked in high levels in a good number of dealers and car super markets. He's said to me that GAP isn't a bad thing in his view, and he wasn't trying to rip off a mate coz he knows I wouldn't buy from any of the places he's worked for! (unless it was from the traders yard).
