Halfords or Champion oil filter?

I noticed that Halfrauds sell two makes of oil filter, the Halfords own brand and Champion. Anyone know which is better and who actually makes the Halfords?

That certainly is interesting and informative. I do know that there is a common view among Saab owners that anything other than an OE filter is false economy due to the valve quality, and they cost little more than aftermarket filters.

It may be worth finding the cost of a genuine filter from a dealer. It's not something you want to take a chance with, and the difference in cost between filters changes will be insignificant.

Some genuine Ford parts are actually cheaper!

I've used both and fram, they always gave good service for me...

As to saab OE filters, they used to be made by Mann, but now appear to be GM sourced.....

Given the choice, I usually go for the Champion, same as I buy Ferodo pads over halfrauds own brand

Yes that is true. I got a filter for my Rover from the dealer last time and it was cheaper than Halfrauds. Same for the windscreen wipers. They're not called Halfrauds for nothing. ;-)

On the subject of great things for soakling up oil spills, we (the otherhalf and me) bought a large ~ 15kg drum of washing powder from Costcos last year on the label it said ideal for soaking up oil spills. Anyway on the last oil change iniveitably oil went all over the drive, gave it a liberal dose of washing powder left for 2 days then swept up and it hasn't left a mark on the concrete. This trick also works amazingly well on diesel spills too! Must be the combination of dry powder and detergent..

Personally I'd go for 'none of the above' and get an OE one, or one from one of the people that makes OE. Hengst, Mann, etc.

Has anyone noticed how hard it is to buy Bosch wipers these days?

Would you want Bosch wipers? Over-priced imo. Auto Express did a test once and Champion came out top for wipers.

And were would you find them?

Because they are now owned by GM perchance?

Hardly surprising, as Saab is now owned by GM. Pre-GM Saabs are better-made, as GM cut the biuld time by more than half.

Bought the Halfords filter for my Cavalier last year. Went out of the store, opened the box and looked at it; cheap and nasty piece of shit with swarf on the thread and no visible one-way valve. Took it straight back in and exchanged it, paying the 50p extra for the Champion which was much better quality.

There was also a significant difference in weight between the two, with the Champion being heavier and generally feeling more solid.

Not in my experience. They *are* pricey, but seem to work well and last. I've never liked Champion, and would rather have halfords own above those. Valeo are OK- and they do OE for a lot of manufacturers.

for most european cars. For Jap ones I'd go to dealers, or a japanese specialist selling OE, for Ford go to the dealers. To be honest, not even dealers charge that much for a filter these days.
