Hub bearing or Track rod end?

There is a small play on the nearside front wheel(RWD drive car). The car failed its Mot beacause of this. The mechanic told me it's the track rod end. It seems can be define which one is failure by look at direction of play (Horizontal or vertical). Does anyone have a better explain on these?

BTW, does the FWD car also have track rod end in the front? Sorry about my english, hope you all can understand.

Many thanks

Tony

IF the bearings worn it will wobble in any direction, if the track rod ends worn it will only wobble horizontally

It varies,

cars with steering have track rod ends whether they are FWD or RWD

If there is vertical play and horizontal play it may indicate wheel bearing problems.

horizontal only may indicate track rod end.

there are other possibilities in either case.

Duncanwood ( snipped-for-privacy@dmx512.co.uk) gurgled happily, sounding much like they were saying :

Indeed. It depends on if the car has any steering fitted or not.
