Track rod end - OEM/Fast fit difference?

May 23, 2004 3 Replies

On changing the front discs and pads on my Audi (1996 A6 Avant 2.5TDi) I noticed a split track rod end bush/gaiter, which they hadn't obviously spotted at the MOT (I'm guessing this would be a failure). I know the tracking's out on it as well, so I'm going to take it to a fast-fit type place to get the tracking done on it, and get them to fit a new track rod end at the same time. Obviously they're going to want to supply the track-rod end, which they'll probably order in from a local motor factor. I'm quite keen to stick to OEM parts for everything, but how much difference in quality is there going to be between a pattern track rod end and an OEM one. Am I being a bit too fussy?

Get a genuine if you can, the size is more accurate, so tracking will be closer and the rubber is (usually ) better

Rubbish

VW Group do not make track rod ends they just buy them in bulk and re-package them as spare parts you are being too fussy

The message from "mrcheerful" contains these words:

Eh? Surely the tracking is set so that the size of the item doesn't matter?
