The Haynes Book of Disinformation says "The ignition timing is controlled entirely by the ignition module (acting in conjunction with the ECU on fuel injected models), and cannot be adjusted. The value may vary significantly if "checked" by simply connecting a timing light to the system and running the engine at idle speed."

It goes on to say that you can't check it without proper Ford kit.

A 91 should have DIS ignition so the timing is not adjustable- there is no distributor. [1]

Tim.. [1] actually you can retard it 3 or 6 or 9 degrees if its pinking due to crap fuel / needing a de coke via the wiring harness.
