Injector washer

No.2 injector on my Perkins Prima engine started blowing round the injector - not terribly badly, but I thought I'd better fix it. It was the same barrel that had a hydraulic lock when the head gasket went, so it was probably set off by that unsettling the injector. Kind bloke at the diesel place gave me a couple of washers.



Amazingly - I got the injector out in about three minutes - about a fiftieth of what I was expecing. Trouble is I couldn't get the old copper washer out. In the end I ground down a flat woodcutting bit so the lead-spike fitted in the hold in the middle and gently resurfaced the old washer turning the drill by hand. This seems to have worked, there's no blowing now.



What I want to know is, how on earth are you supposed to get the sodding things out anyway? If it'd been damaged I'd have been stuck.


With great difficulty normally. Usual way is to get some form off small strong hook, and pull it out. If that doesn't work, it then comes down to applying suitable brute force(ie. hammer) through a range off different implements (ie. chisels).

Expensive hooky thing of memory. Occasionally "assisted" by an oxy torch.

Maplin sell a set of PCB tools. Hooks and things. Made out of pretty high quality steel. Very useful for many things other than PCBs.

I had the injectors on an old Festa 1.8D reconditioned. The chap who reconditioned them said he'd never seen injectors so badly affected by heat. He gave me some new copper washers and told me to make sure I got the old ones out.

After a few minutes pondering I realised that I was looking at a silver coloured metal through the injector holes. It turned out that the car had never had washers fitted from new, which from what has been said, sounds like a blessing - although the injectors may have lasted a bit longer if they had been and I could have avoided doing the job at all!

Not really, you just had a good idea, so good in fact that it's used very regularily not only when reconditioning cylinder heads, but also during manufacture of the head and the seating face has a poor suface finish. The thing to watch out for when re-cutting is radial line like the spokes of a wheel, as these will promote a leak. And if you do cut into the base metal, dont stop until you clean up a complete circle where the washer will sit.
