My M reg Astra will not start.

You can hear the motor or something whizzing around, but nothing engages.

Is a whole new starter required.

Might respond to cleaning. Or might not.

Sounds like the pinion is slipping. Not something you could do yourself. Job for autoelectrician. or replace starter

The message from BigSteve contains these words:

Possibly.

Try whacking the starter motor hard with the handle of a large screwdriver or similar.

Also consider the possibility that the flywheel has a worn spot on it on which the starter's pinion won't engage. Test this by putting the car in gear, ignition off, and moving it forward a bit - enough to move the engine round a bit. Then start as usual. If that works then it may be a new flywheel/ring-gear you need.
