I've never looked back, drive a '97 540 now.

800 pounds?!! Are you going the long way 'round?

There seems to be two groups of people - those old enough(!) to be brought up on fastish cars and those brought up on very small cars. To the first group a 2 litre is maybe just about acceptable on a normal sized car - to the latter it's a speed demon. I know which group I'm in!

1800 miles to where im going, a couple of weeks driving around and at least 1500 coming back.

...

I will keep a eye out for one in the near future,

If you left from manchester you could be in Poland with less than 1000 miles on the car, even less if you take a looong ferry ride.

oops i mixed up miles with km...thats about right!

well I have plenty of fun in a good FWD around country lanes, a lardy 520 isn't gonna be that fantastic in the twisties..... Still - a good comfortable barge all the same :-)

E30 325i all the way!

All the way into the hedge backwards? ;-)

I think i will have to go for a 525 before Sept. I have to get to Berlin from Sheffield, then down to Dresden, Riesa, Niesky, Zittau and over the borders.

2 people, bit of luggage, anyone got any idea's what sort of mpg i can expect if i take it steady? im not up yet on beemers. ta! >

Never done that yet, even in some really bad handling RWD cars, like a FSO Polonez i had that i ragged to death...oh i did go backwards over a cliff in Derbyshire once, really funny(and scary)..sheet of ice.

The message from "Jules" contains these words:

So, that's 3300 miles - about 350 quid in my 2.5 litre automatic Audi at UK prices.

as bad as that? ta

Germany is a fraction cheaper than here, not sure about the countries onroute. I noticed at the German pumps they have 3-4 types of petrol.

Prexactly. The E30 is notorious for being too tail happy. Virtually all my driving has been in RWD cars, so I'm pretty used to how they handle, but the E30 is one car I'd never even consider. Mike.

I used to get >30mph at a steady 80-90mph 400 mile run in my 325i but it's quite a bit lighter.

On a m/way at 70-80mph I get into the low 30's in my 525 auto. The auto's have a much taller top gear gear than the manuals. 0.74 as against 1.0 for the manual.box, and only just over 2000 revs at 70mph. Book says 36.7mpg for the auto at 75mph, but I've never achieved that. Only 34.5 for the manual, and 34 dead for the 520 manual. Mike.
