KA update

Ok, give up on the damn thing, coming back from golf engine light appears again, P0402, cleared the code, gave it a 40 mile thrash on the local dual carriageway, 4500rpm max through gears, 70 flat out, 80 downhill, no recurrance but totally gutless. MOT in a month, see large bill approaching. Don't like to throw good money after bad so was wondering if there may be some end-of-line pre-Fiat500 models still available at a discount price. Rog

That's just a sticky EGR valve.

a long time ago a customer bought a crossflow type escort mk3 at auction, it was rather gutless and wouldn't rev. and it came to me, eventually I worked out that it had received a new cam chain and the cam was a tooth retarded, they obviously could not suss the fault and so had stuck it in the auction.

Sorry Duncan, correction, P0420. Rog

Still got torque at low revs? Given everything else I'd check the cat isn't partially blocked.

Nowadays, retired, I can only scratch around in the street, that is where the expense comes in, two oxygen sensors fitted, £246, then was quoted £650 for a cat fitted. Plus the wishbones will need doing yet again, at nearly £50 an hour it doesn't make sense to keep throwing money at it. Rog

You'll be wanting a new garage, the Cat costs under =A3200, if it's a 1.=

3 =

then you can get aftermarket ones (lifespan variable) for under =A3100

Are you saying it wont rev over 4500rpm or pull more than 70mph?

Cat has partially melted and is blocking exhaust.

or fallen in half, twisted and is blocking the way out, I have in the past cut them open, removed the broken half, welded them back up and the rattling stops, they run better and pass the test ok.

Damnit Mr Cheerful you need to be local to me :)

70 max on the flat, it's like driving my Transit (when employed) restricted to 70. Don't get me started on that, you get in everyones way. There should be some huge convoys when everything over 3.5 tonne is restricted to 56 mph.

Popped into the place I had the sensors fitted, said cat plus wishbones about 300 notes. Nevertheless will be in Melton tomorrow checking the new car alternatives. Rog

Had a lad with a Marina van who had fitted two engines (one after the other :) ) to try to cure it running on two cylinders. Eventually called me in, after much diagnosis found he had fitted a single pipe first section and welded up the remaining port of the exhaust manifold. Rog

I think I ought to get a lottery ticket tomorrow. I'd just finished my cup of tea before reading this otherwise it would be all over the screen :-)

Sorry, but if you or the Lambda sensor 'place' cannot spot a restricted exhaust from 100yards from those symptoms, you both need to be shot.

Passed the MOT at the 'place' yesterday, straight through. Took the coil pack off my lads abandoned Focus engine and replaced the

6month old pattern part, put paid to the missfire under load. At one time you did not need to go running to the main dealer to get parts, parts from the factors usually were sufficient. Rog

That's not been my experience.

In the eighties, I had a Fiesta with a misfire. Sometimes it would die at tickover, but would restart. Sometimes it would misfire under load, then clear.

Turned out to be a badly made crimp connection on the pattern points assembly I'd fitted.

Stuck mostly with genuine stuff since then...

Hi Chris, I must admit there were certain makes of clutch, brake pads, shoes etc that you wouldn't touch with a barge pole, but contacts, plugs, bearings, seals, oil, filters, bulbs etc - the run-of-the-mill items are or were satisfactory. Motorcraft parts are not the top of the range for instance, you could insist on genuine ford parts if the customer insisted. I started as a contractors plant fitter, switched to agricultural engineer, trucks, cars, then back to plant fitter. Redundancies make you flexible. Rog

In terms of Clutches , friction materials and the like, B&B, LUK, that kind of thing are often suppling the parts to the OEM.

There are some VERY VERY good conterfeit Bosch parts about at the moment, but rubbish quality, especially alternators and starters, mostly being peddled by the likes of ECP and blueprint. Watch out.

I mostly use direct from the dealer nowadays, apart from where i am 100% certain the part is the genuine article.

Now, that requires a special kind of thickness.
