Micra clutch again - nearly ready to do it!

I posted before about replacing a Micra clutch and now I have all the bits. Just one thing am not sure about in the Wonderful Book of Haynes...

About getting the driveshaft out of the transmission. It says to use a lever to lever the driveshaft out until "the retaining clip compresses into its groove and is released."

Probably when I get to this bit it may be obvious - but, as basically the shaft has just been pulled out of the transmission, - I can't see how this clip thing keeps it in place?

Does this clip (when in groove) allow the shaft to come right out?

Should I replace this clip with a new one when re-fitting the shaft. Thanks

Yep. You may well have to lever quite hard.

In theory. they're cheap so if you've got two use them, they just slide on. If not they'llk probably be fine, but you won't half swear if not.

Thanks. I'll get a couple just in case then.

Basically how it works is there's a groove inside the gearbox where the shaft goes in. When the clip on the shaft gets to the point where this groove is then it expands as it's a sprung steel ring with a gap in, and holds it in place. When you remove the shaft and lever it out, as it leaves the groove in the gearbox, it is compressed allowing you to remove it.

Usually they're OK for a good few goes.
