Mk3 Golf gearbox problems

Evening all

The gearbox on my MK3 1.8 golf has just started to whine/drone, if thats the correct term. I assume it's the gearbox but it might be something else, what else could cause such a noise. If i were to source a 2nd hand gearbox (020 model) how much would it cost to have it reconditioned and is it worth it as i only intend to keep the car for about another 2 years tops.

What is the general consensus, is it worth getting the box sorted now and can any of you fine fellows recommend a company in Hampshire. If the box is on the way out should i look to getting it sorted ASAP or do i have a couple of weeks/months to play with.

Cheers all.

Cheapskate method is to chance a second hand 'box from a breakers and just swap it over - must only be about a hundred quid. It could be something else but without more info it's difficult to say.

Could just be low oil level. If so then try to find out if there's a leak (driveshaft seals are favourite, but the input shaft seal could also be 'shafted') and top up the oil. If that doesn't quieten it down then you'll be needing some new bearings. Around here the average price to have your gearbox reconned is about £200 if you remove/refit yourself. A s/hand 'box may well work out cheaper, but make sure it's from the same size engine as the ratios will probably be different and gearboxes have torque ratings which you shouldn't exceed..

I had the same problem on an 's' reg Mk3 Golf estate 2.0Litre 8v

mine started to whine at about 150,000 miles, then grumble after another

5000miles, then the nearside driveshaft fell off on the M27 in stop start traffic!!!! I paid VW £450 to fix it all up again (Company Car) then at it's next service the same garage told me that the gearbox layshaft bearings where shot and a new gearbox would be required at a cost of £2500 inc VAT.... The car being only worth a couple of grand the company traded it in for a Mk3 Vectra estate (crap). They where only offering £1200 trade in, I almost bought it privately and sourced another gearbox, wish I had now but the mileage on the engine put me off at the time and it drank a lot of gas.

Whining/droning could also be a driveshaft or wheel bearing?

If it is gearbox a change to thicker oil (EP90 instead of the recommended

75/80) and a good dose of Molyslip have worked a treat on our old ZX. Noise has completely gone.

I had Polo gearbox rebuilt by Allens Garage, Tadley Hill, Tadley, Hants. RG26 3PL Telephone: 0118-981 3623 about 10 years ago. They loaned me a car while it was being done, and they did a good job. They used to call themselves gearbox specialists - I would check to see if they still do before committing yourself to anything.
