Mk4 golf boot won't open

mk4 golf 1.6s 2001

I loaded up all my work stuff the night before, came this morning at the office I went to open my boot and it would not open even though the car was unlocked.

I tried opening the key manually and nothing. The central locking key fob unlock part is pressed twice and nothing (which always opens it)

I worked the key in and out of the lock and squieted some wd40 and nothing.

When I turn the key it just feels like its not catch anything or engaging.

I managed to fold the back seats down and crawl into the boot much to my the amusement of my co-workers lol.

No fuses are blown.

Theres not water damage in the hatch as I a few months ago installed a new microswitch which the old one was damaged from the leaky rear washer.

Everything went back together as it should. Worked great since till this morning.

I have no idea how to get into the boot short of crawling into the boot and trying to get the plastic trim off or break it to get at the mechanism to see whats wrong. I'm hoping there is a less destructive option ?
