N Reg Ford Escort, all revs and no torque

Sorry if this appears again so soon, it has not shown up on my newsreader

I'm no mechanic so that is why I've come to you guys. My Escort is now hard to drive. It has absolutely no grunt at all. Its done 84000 miles but I actually think it may have done 184000 just a gut feeling but could be wrong. Anyway in first, there is no decent acceleration and it revs highly, its even worse when I get into 2nd. It takes me ages to get up to a decent speed and when there its OK, say 70 ish. However, now and again just tapping on the pedal sends the revs away up then settles back. I haven't got the funds for a replacemnt as yet, my MOT is up at the end of december and well I've got money to get it through that within reason but it is becoming harder and harder to drive and less safe as I now have to give more time and space at junctions to get up to speed etc. Feel free to ask me any questions or offer advice.

Cheers Craig
