First, don't top post. Second - if you have to ask then you obviously need a fairly simple answer, which is what I gave: if it looks like there is a lot of car in the way of the sump then leave it to someone else. If not, then it's only a matter of undoing a few bolts and changing the sump.

Is that clearer for you now?

The sump itself is about £90. The time taken varies according to how corroded the exhaust is - normally allow 3-4 hours.

You can do it yourself, but the downpipe studs can be siezed and break off, which makes it a PITA job.

A reasonable garage should do it for under £300. A back street guy might be £200.

You need to find somebody to trust in your area though, whether main dealer or independent it doesn't matter.

Thanks Andy.It sounds like a simple job thats bound to go wrong so best left to an expert.Thought of studs seizing etc gives you the `orrors. Bi

. They just estimated about £100-£150 to replace the sump on my Mk1 Punto.

Yes, they even scare me off jobs now, they can be so much easier when you have good equipment around - oxy-acetylene, large bench and vice etc.
