The difference in fuel consumption in a large car is negligible - and certainly a lot cheaper than the cost of fixing the aircon because you don't use it often enough to keep it properly lubricated.
Must say that that is the premise on which I have always worked. It is an 'automatic' climate control system. Regularly turns in 40mpg, HDi. Always comfortable and mist-free.
