Re: F**king brake bleed nipples

The message from John Henderson contains these words:

Yes and yes.

There's a minor mod to the kit which makes like a lot easier. If you pull the pipe that goes into the dummy reservoir cap through a bit so it sticks say an inch into the reservoir, when you release the pressure excess fluid is pushed back into the bleeder's bottle. That way you don't end up with an overfull reservoir.

Maybe I have that bit wrong. I do remember something about bleed nipples and seal reversal, affecting astras in particular. Maybe it was that there was a strong possibility of reversing them if you bleed the brakes by pumping them, and that you should use a pressure bleeder.

Oh OK. I can't see why you'd need restrictive flow between the reservoir and master cylinder. In any case, as someone else pointed out, any pressure on the seals due to pushing pistons back in is the same type of pressure you exert on them when braking normally.

Is it possible to reverse the seals during bleeding when the piston moves back NOT pushed by pressure in the braking circuits (because the extra fluid it pushed in went out the bleed nipple)? Dunno :)

It fits my Fords and came with a variety of adaptors. Yes, good seals are necessary :)

Peter.

Speaking for myself, I knew the little bastards were probably going to break, I just kept going anyway because I couldn't think what other option I had and I always knew I could bleed through the hose unions if the worst were to happen.

Fair point.

I don't have a heat source worthy of mention. I suppose I could get a blowtorch but it seems overkill.

Good advice for *any* threaded fastener.

Woodscrews in door hinges that have been bodged about and painted over respond especially well to it.

I always undo the bleed nipples when changing pads. It just makes pushing the pistons back that bit easier. I've never know whether there was any logic to it, it's just something I figured out myself about 15 years ago because I'm a lazy abstrad. It also helps to keep the fluid fresher too.

Vim Fuego ( snipped-for-privacy@fastmail.fm) gurgled happily, sounding much like they were saying :

Not at all. Many garages keep oxy gear to hand just for this and similar jobs.

The ones on my 20 year old Capri came off no problem as well.

Don't tell me, the nipples were fine; it was the car that broke off. :-)

LOL.
