1,000 passengers would need about 8 carriages at close to a million each; that would more than double the cost per passenger.

Use the lower price of a single deck bus of around 100 grand, and that would reduce the cost to less than half of your figures.

On that basis, the cost per passenger in terms of purchase price of vehicle is around five times higher for the train.

Some rolling stock is around 25 years old, but is being phased out on safety grounds; *some* of the buses around here are a similar age!

Maintenance costs per passenger mile for locomotives are likely to be similarly higher than for a bus. Certainly the HST's require fairly regular engine replacement, and I can't imagine that's cheap.

So long as you're not wasting energy by spinning tyres or with excessive clutch slip, the rate of change of kinetic energy is immaterial to the energy required to make that change of kinetic energy. The problem must be that you are building up more kinetic energy than usual before it is time to convert it to heat.

They do tend to last a long time look at the Class 37 and 47 been around since 1960 was it?..

I doubt a single diesel loco is that much, a more a EMU set maybe..
