Could someone help please, I would like to check the gearbox oil level in my
The owners manual says, consult your dealer, and as my local dealer is next to useless I would prefer to do it myself.
Also if it is low which oil should I use as the book doesn't say?

Manual or Automatic? Automatic should have a dip stick, manual will probably be a bolt you undo and the level will be specified as x mm from the bolt rim (make a little dip stick with a bent wire).
I remember reading a horror story with a certain make of manual box which had two simular bolts, one for checking the level and another which held together some important internal working of the 'box. Several owners unscrewed the wrong one and wrecked their gearbox when they pulled away! I think you should invest in a Haynes manual to be sure!

I did it, a vw polo box has a bolt on the front that appears to be a level plug, it isn't, it holds some of the gear selectors. A gearbox strip and rebuild had to be done
the manual espace has a level plug on the left of the box, uses 75/85w oil, I would stick in mt75 oil. Any car shop will have a book showing the right oil for the box (of the make they stock) Many French auto boxes have special checking procedures that can't be duplicated at home.

Its a manual gearbox on the G8T engine.
Looks likely to be a garage job then, no Hayes manual available, and I don't want to unbolt the wrong thing.
Other gearboxes in the manual show where the plug is, but for the G8T engine it says 'Consult the dealer'.
I'll see if one of the local mechanics know and go from there.

The autodata shows something like a dipstick on the rear of box by the driveshaft. 75w/80

Old VW heap of my fathers did that to him as I recall. He ended up selecting two gears at once and going nowhere fast, or slow. Box wasn't wrecked but it was a split off and strip to fix it again.
