Retro-fit alarm for shite old van?

You can get some really cheap alarms - you don't need anything fancy or insurance approved on a s**te old van.

As for the immobiliser - hidden switch is as good a solution as anything else.

Hidden switch to the ignition coil works a dream. I also had a few years ago a Imaculate VX Cavalier - I also added a 2nd hidden switch to the AIR horns I had fitted. When try to start car, horn became active and all 4 air horns piped up - That certainly got peoples attention when I forgot to dissable them !!!

When did you last see anyone paying *any* attention to a car alarm?

By all means fit one but if you want you van to still be there after a break-in, fit an immobiliser. A hidden switch is probably effecive enough (and cheap).

you want to discourage any attempt at theft, an alarm may be annoying, but it means they have already tried !! Get a disclok first, this is visible and very hard to quickly defeat (50 quid and transferable), second, fit 5 lever locks to the doors (25 quid , very cheap from screwfix) lastly fit an alarm with pager (200 quid)

To quantify the price, just think how much of a pain it will be if it is not there in the morning.

Yes, good ideas. Where are these door locks on the Screwfix site? I've done a search but cannot see them. I'm off to the local (quality) locksmithh tomorrow to get a good lock for the rear door.

I think the kit in the back would be more of a target than the van itself - they are probably worth 3 times the value of the van. So yes, it needs to be sorted. Ta Alan.

Buy a vanvault lock for the rear doors (about 35 quid from screwfix. The five lever locks are plain old household door locks !! You could also buy ready to fit kits from a car shop that are neater but less secure and more expensive.
