rover 200 diesal turbo smking when starting engine

i have a rover 200 turo,deisal,when i start it up it starts smocking a greaish cloude of smoke out the exsurst and spluters a bit but after a while it it ok,does any one no if this is a big problem,i have always keept the tank half full and not let it get empty,any advise, thanks teza

Sounds like a glow plug has failed.

Or the glowplug relay (next to the yellow one in the engine bay) has sooted contacts (common).
