A friend has a Rover 414 which cuts out randomly. It will start and run for a few secs and then cut-out. It might or might not re-start. It might go ok for a few hours and eventually stop again. Fuel supply is ok. Anyone know any particular issues with this model. Is it worth trying a crankshaft sender or is it a job for a dealer.

Have you checked the ignition side of things? Have heard a few stories about the rotor arms failing (especially the Lucas ones). Could also be the crank angle sensor as you say, easy enough to fit yourself.
Yep Crank angle sensor -- well known problem on this model -- usually shows up a week or two after the clutch has been changed. Can be a swine to get the old one out as they jam in the hole and access isn't good.
