If its cutting out then it sounds like a fuelling issue or maybe air in the fuel system. Guy King has a lot more recent experience of these engines so hopefully he'll be along soon to advise.

When you say it "sometimes cuts out completely", do you mean it's running OK then suddenly stops, or you just can't get it started in the first place?

My money would be on a duff lift pump and or air in the fuel system.

Check you've got power to the fuel-stop solenoid when it's died. Also check you can hear it clicking as you touch its wire to it.

How well is it serviced? When was the last time the fuel filter was changed?

Hi It seems to be a problem with immobiliser as it just stops and there is no ignition at all. but previous owner says immobiliser has been disconnected any thoughts john

The immobiliser can only work by interrupting the feed to the solenoid on the injector pump. When it's died, check that the feed is still live. If it isn't, then you best bet would be to run a new wire back to the ignition switch.
