Rover's return (Pug diseasel)

Hi all, can anyone help me with two old Rovers (1990-1994)???

1) Main car. 418SLDturbo. Has sod all power until the turbo gets spinning. Couldn't even pull off up a car park ramp without revving the engine to 3K and keeping it there! Dangerously lethargic pulling away from junctions etc. Also idles a bit rough and using more fuel. Problem only started a few weeks ago - any ideas??? I tried removing the air filter temporarily as it was rather dirty and oily, but it had no effect. I'm guessing it'll be injector related? Once the turbo is blowing the performance seems fine.

2) Donor car. 416GTi. Bought it today for £50. Guy said it needed a new head gasket as it was overheating. Drove it about 16 miles home without any problems (other than an expired battery). Radiator core looks shot to pieces, but there's no white smoke, bubbling coolant or mayo on the dipstick. Chances of this really being a gasket??? What bits can I transfer to car #1 above? I'm having the leather interior, headlamp, ariel, front e/windows and possibly some bits off the dash. Will the driveshafts fit as the diesel ones have shafted CV joints?! I believe they both use the Honda gearbox, but the petrol one has the engine on the opposite side of the car (i.e. the left not the back!)...

Cheers.

Injector or transfer pressure in the pump, any decent diesel specialist should be able to give you the answer. Using Opera's revolutionary e-mail client:

My Montego TD is like that. That's how they are.

Yehbut surely this starts below 3k as the OP suggests? Otherwise you haven't got many revs left before the governor cuts in...

Probably - but not much. Takes /ages/ to get the power up. Plenty of oomph when it does - but deadly across junctions unless you slip the clutch to keep the revs up. Or learn to do without and just drive differently - which is what I do. It's a bit like driving my first Fiat 127 - only this gets going eventually and is super when it does.

Mate had a 127 at college, don't ask me how because I don't know but he fabricated the bits to turbocharge it (turbo from a diesel pug in a scrappy) - noisy, laggy, but so light and revvy.

Didn't last long but went much faster than it had rights to.

There's whole sites out there by people who've turbo'd their Yugo 45's (903 FIAT pushrod lump).

Some of the welding looks _really_ nice, like they've made the tubes out of lengths of plate steel, welded together for the facet look.
