Carina e 1.8gs

Hi group, im lookin at a few carina e's tomorrow. All are at dealers but they only have part history apparently. Are there any concerns i should have about this, is there anything i especially need to look out for.

Nothing specific- they're pretty reliable however on the leanburn engines, the cat and o2 sensors are fiendishly expensive as they are not the same as per a non lean burn engine. You'd be looking at £100 for the o2 sensor and £200 for the cat- these are from

At least double this from toyota! Beware that if the o2 sensor is very rusted they usually destroy the thread in the front pipe when removed meaning you either have to have a new threaded nut welded on, or a new front pipe- another £150.

So look for evidence of renewal if the car is on around 70-80k and if not budget accordingly.

The sensor is screwed into the downpipe.

Otherwise no worries, we currently have over 300k on a 1.8GS auto, these things are close to indestructible...thing still drives tight without a single creak or rattle!

Only one prob - power steering rack started leaking badly at 140K...

O2 sensor replaced at 210K.

O2 sensor is in the exhaust manifold upstream of the cat.
