I wouldnt say a 2.7ton car that gets 28-30mpg on a run was too bad TBH though.

You need to do the sums. How much per mile you would save through having diesel, versus what extra cost is involved in buying the diesel in the first place. Diesels are not usually an economic option for low mileages.

Done that before now. I reckon it's about even over several years, which is the term of ownership I'd be aiming for. The diesel would cost, say, £2000 more (assuming brand new, maybe 1000-1500 nearly new) and that amount would eventually be recouped, but it would take a while.
