What utter s**te, a few hundred yards should take a minute if you're fit, if that. Nobody's going to give a flying f*ck about that minute, except you, who seems to think they're in some really high pressure job! If you're not a high-flying executive (er...does that even make sense?) then don't worry about that walking minute of your day.

It's apparently a 'few hundred yards' - so *no* excuse to walk home pretty much. That's the ultimate in laziness.

Unless, as so many people do, the OP actually meant "it's a mile", and a 'few hundred yards' was a severe underestimate.

It's a good answer, just walk it. Jog it in your sexy outfit, if you're really very required to have no spare time whatsoever in work, ie: 60 seconds or so.

The above will do your car less harm, and will work out better for your belly in the long run :-) You know it makes sense...

Jesus f*ck... it *will* arse up your petrol engine, and a result, some people are saying walk. Forget the 'walking' bit, why not cycle or something? It's cheaper, wont use up as much fuel, which you're paying a lot for for the sake of saving some minutes. It doesn't take 2 seconds to drive, realistically it'll take about 2/3/4 minutes, so walking, or even better cycling, isn't such a bad option.

Decades ago, VW did a thorough study which found that warming up an engine by idling caused more wear than driving straight off at light engine load.

Having said that, there are two immediate problems with making very short trips. One is that the exhaust system will not get hot enough to evaporate the condensate, resulting in water pooling and rusting. The second is that the battery (having started the car) will be sulphating through not being at near-full charge at switch-off. For both of these, the longer the car sits in this condition, the worse things get.

These will result in maintenance expenses occurring earlier than they otherwise would. But whether these expenses would be offset by burning extra fuel to avoid them is a question I can't answer.

Oil sludge accumulation has also been mentioned. But this is more of a problem if the car is only rarely taken for a good run.

You've had lots of advice about "thinking outside the square", and that's what I'd be doing.
