vehicle memory savers

Hello,

Does anyone use a car memory saver like this:

I'm a bit confused about how they work.

When working on the car you disconnect the battery to stop any inadvertent short circuits but if you plug this into your cigar socket, won't the same inadvertent short circuits fuse this power supply? If it does short, won't the codes be lost?

If you've got the radio code written down, are these worth it?

BTW are you supposed to/do you disconnect the battery everytime or only for certain jobs?

Thanks.

Stephen gurgled happily, sounding much like they were saying:

Yes and yes. But the short will be a lot less spectacular, since there's much less juice available and the ciggy lighter is fused.

Depends. Alarms & remote locking can throw a paddy, engine & autobox ECUs can lose stored driving profiles and revert to default.

Anything where there's a risk of a short. So if you're pulling the starter or alternator (high-current unfused connections) or risk dropping something onto the battery, it's worth pulling it out.

The savers are most useful where you're just changing an old battery for a new 'un.

It will be current limited so can't supply much more than about a tenth of an amp to power what the car needs to keep memory etc. Shorting it out would not cause a risk, but obviously the memory will be lost. Might survive for a few seconds without power, but not much longer.
