What nonsense...

Nothing, except that it's too bloody cold to be outside maintaining a car when you can sit here arguing in a comfy chair with a steaming mug of coffee in one hand. :)

Loading thread data ...

They're needed to get the headline 0-60 time, a marketing ploy to attract people who buy cars based on magazine reviews and spec sheets....

Anyway, I have 400NM from 0 rpm ;-)

So WTF can't you mark it OT or do it somewhere else?

WTF should we?

This is the most active the group has been in *years*....

And the whole thread is off topic, and is marked OT in the headers.

I've changed the subject line to something more appropriate

Of course, but I've been larfing at all the macho stuff about cars, quite entertaining. It's beginning to pall though...

Im too old to be amused by the willy waving of the usual suspects, one click of the mouse and they are gone, until someone changes the subject line. :(

modern cars only rarely breakdown, try telling that to the RAC, AA, and all the other breakdown services! As an aside the company that towed me home told me that they cannot even repair their own towtrucks anymore. Needs a computer at a dealer to trouble shoot the lorries faults at some £300 a time, progress..... Harry its like modern radio kit, can you fix yours at home.... R D (G0UIS)

In percentage terms, breakdowns are *much* less than even 20 years ago.

Bear in mind that everything that the AA & RAC get called to is listed as a breakdown; this includes punctures, flat batteries due to lights left on, screenwash not working due to no winter solution, keys locked in vehicle - you get the general idea?

Why are you assuming every breakdown is down to the electronics so can only be 'diagnosed' by a computer? Cars still have waterpumps that disintegrate, cam belts that break, hoses which fail, tyres which puncture, batteries which die. Etc etc. Total failure of vehicle

*electronics* - such that a recovery is needed - are actually very rare.

Nor do you always need a computer to diagnose electronics problems. What has happened is true mechanics have become rare - and those who have learned about modern vehicle electronics to basic fault finding skills even rarer.

I reckon I could change a wheel on an average before the AA arrived. (Or even on a Mondeo).

Of course. As could most subscribers to this NG.

What percentage of the motoring public do you think we represent? My guess would be significantly less than 0.01%

The average driver these days wouldn't know:

a) If they had a spare b) If it was full-size, or a space-saver c) If their car had any tools for wheel changing d) Where any tools might be located

If you think I'm exaggerating, try and find a breakdown patrol who isn't busy (not at the moment, obviously!), and ask them.
