Wheel bearing module

This is for a project, not an automotive application, where I need a sealed rugged bearing I can bolt onto a structure and attach a rotating disc.



I've searched for some time on eBay for a self contained wheel bearing that is bolt on. One issue is the photo doesn't bear any resemblance to the actual bearing, even when it says "Actual item". I already have one bearing I have initiated a return for.

It might not break the bank, but are there any cheaper versions? I don't need an ABS sensor.


You're talking about a hub assembly rather than wheel bearing. Might be worth looking at the sort used on trailers.

Thanks for the idea. Most trailer hubs seem to designed to fit on a stub axle with tapered roller bearings.

I couldn't find one that is designed to bolt onto say a box section or similar.

Yes - you'd be looking at adapting some form of hub and stub axle assembly. Perhaps a strut complete. Cut it off just behind the brake (caliper or backplate) fixing and use that to mount it to the beam.

Do you need both a horizontal axis and that high a load bearing (sic) capacity?

Would a pillow block do the job?

The best so far is a Ford Fiesta rear wheel bearing hub assembly, that has 4 studs for the wheel and I can bolt the assembly flat onto some box section.

The trouble is the item that I want to spin has a 2" central hole. I was anticipating drilling holes to match the stud pattern of a hub bearing assembly.

Anything that involves making something to fit the bore of the pillow block will need a lot more work.

The load capacity won't be the same as a car might inflict on a wheel bearing, but some rigidity and good sealing from the elements is essential.

Yes, I do need to have the disc maintain good vertical and horizontal position.

A single taper rolller bearing, of vehicle wheel bearing size without a means of mounting from a quality manufacturer like say SKF or NSK etc would cost around a tenner, 28 quid for that fully contained bearing assembly containing two bearing races IS a bargain.

Just how cheap are you and precisely what loads are you intending this bearing to carry?

From that and your replies to others ISTM you don't want just a bearing but eg a box trailer suspension unit complete with hub.

I haven't thought of that, shame any trailer suspension has minimal adjustment and is also quite 'long'.

I'm still leaning towards the Fiesta rear hub assembly.

Also known as plummer blocks. I was going to mention these, also perhaps more usefully two or four bolt flanged, and four bolt cartridge housings on the same site.

I guess a lot depends on your budget, and the loads and duty of your project. Give us more of a clue and you will probably get some more suggestions.

But you'll need the stub axle too. Hence my idea of buying a complete used strut with hub and hacking it about. Should cost far less than a decent new bearing on its own.

Could have given you an SD1 unit - but have got rid. If that had been cut off just behind the dust cover fixing holes, you'd have four equally spaced ones to fix to the beam. And adjustable taper bearings that never wear out. ;-)

The Fiesta and Mondeo rear hub assemblies are complete and have their own internal 'stub axle'. The Fiesta one is better as it can bolt flat, where the Mondeo unit fits into a 'hole' but still bolted with 4 bolts to the strut. The 'hole' is for access to the ABS socket and a 'power bulge' for the bearing.

I did look at whole trailing arm assemblies but they were complicated and would have needed adjustment (cutting and welding).

In the end I got a Fiesta unit.

Ah - right. Sounds ideal. Not something I've come across.
