Wing mirror help please?

Can anyone help me out? My wife insists that some cars if not all cars used to come with only one wing mirror as standard but she's unsure exactly which side.

I really can't remember this although I'm sure if it was a fact that i would. As far as I'm aware all cars have always had two wing mirrors as I'm sure manufacturers would insist they might as well fit two rather than one.

Can anybody settle this for us?

Thanks in advance.

They used to have one, on the offside (driver's side).

A nearside mirror was an optional extra.

Thanks Steve for the quick reply looks like I'll have to eat humble pie!!

Or I could lie to her just to feel like I won!

The message from snipped-for-privacy@italiancar.co.uk (SteveH) contains these words:

Sort of.

The offside mirror was compulsory, the nearside was optional on saloon cars. Estates, vans and anything else which could reasonably be loaded to obscure the view through the rear window and the NS was compulsory. Whether it was like that from the start, I don't know, but that was the state of play at one stage.

For all I know it might still be!

Strictly speaking, no cars have wing mirrors now; they are fitted to the door. In the era when wing mirrors were common, they were completely optional. Only the interior mirror was needed.

My Mk1 Fiesta, bought new in 1983, came with only a driver's side mirror. I had to fit one to the NS in order to legally use it in France.

If my interpretation of the MOT rules are correct, it seems like you only need any one of the three on a car in order to pass thge MOT...

They always do, in the end. Or at least you have to let them think so to make them shut up ;-)

Although you could always point out that it was a very long time ago that this was the case, so she must be *very* old to remember it?

That'll help...

It isn't

You need the O/S exterior mirror, and either an interior, or a nearside exterior, unless your car is pre 1978

Unless your vehicle is pre-'78... :-)

Yep, thanks, I can see that now.

Chris.
