Wipers not parking

On my V-reg.Vectra, windscreen wipers have decided to give-up on self- parking, and the MOT is booked for Thursday. Am I correct in thinking this would be a point for failure? The MOT website is not clear on this, and a mate says its not a fail, but he had no evidence either way. In addition, first time I have ever had this fault on any car, a bit stuck as to how to fix it. Advice appreciated, thank-you.

it would not fail because the self park is inop. as long as you can start and stop them and they wipe the majority of the area that they should, then they will pass.

The manual is pretty clear on this. (Pun unintended!)

The wipers must operate continuously:

If the wipers self-park, this must not be in a position that obstructs the driver's view:

Failure to self-park can be caused by a fault with the internal switch in the wiper motor, a wiring fault in the connection to the motor, or on some cars by a failed relay.

no, you don't need a puller, turn on the wipers, let them get to vertical on the screen and turn the ignition off, then just undo the nut, lift the wiper arm and shake it left and right to dislodge the tight bit. However, before messing about get to the wiper motor wiring and check that the permanently (via the ign. sw.) powered lead is actually powered with the ign on and the wipers off and that the earth lead is intact.

4square gurgled happily, sounding much like they were saying:

It isn't.

It's as straightforward as if it doesn't say it IS a fail, then it isn't.

Does the intermittent work?

Adrian, the intermittent does not work. Have nice new windscreen today (60mm crack in drivers vision in old one) so have to get wipers working properly!

Right, my money's on the intermittent relay, then.

I can hear the relay click-in, wipers move on intermittent position, then relay clicks again, all stops. Will try to get new relay tomorrow.

it is not the relay, so don't waste any money on one. The relay gives a short pulse to the motor, long enough till the self parking unit in the motor takes over. Your fault is either that the self park is not getting power or the self park mechanism has died. Either is possible. Easiest to check is that the self park has power to it..

Good ending here - yesterday morning, wipers decided to start working properly again!!

Must have been the cold weather, but cannot think why.

Thank you all for replies.

Just got new MOT, no hassles!

The self park relies on a springy electrical connector, it is surrounded by grease, which will get much thicker in cold weather and might prevent good contact, so that may be what has happened, using the wipers for a while would warm the motor up and give the same effect as warmer weather!
