I wanna build a Miata Monster

Interesting idea if you like spending hours in your garage tinkering, and want to prove a point. If you just want a fast Miata, a better result with less hassle would be obtained bolting a turbo onto an existing Miata. An s2000 produces 240Hp. A bolt on, Flyin Miata kit can go to 265 at the back wheels.

Answer, as pre Hot Rod Magazine many years back: "ANY engine can be put into ANY car", the question should be is it worth it?

Personally, I doubt it.

If you want fast, don't settle for "sort of" fast, spend a couple of hours building something like this:

I have never heard of it being done, it would be interesting, though as has been pointed out, a turbo or SC would be cheaper, easier, and have more power, especially more torque, unless you modified the S2000 motor as well. Stock S2000's are easy meat for the '91 turbo in straight-line acceleration.

I would sell the parts from the S2000 and use the money to replace the engine and transmission in the miata. Depending on what the Honda parts get, which should be high at that low mileage, you would probably end up with a free 2002 miata and a decent amount of cash left in your pocket. The Honda engine alone should do quite well.

I am sure that I have a few organs and various other parts that I don't need, the brain comes to mind first as the most useless, but Ebay has that stupid policy against selling corpses or even body parts.

Hell, they won't even let those salon owners sell Britney's hair, the bastards.

Can it be done? Probably - heck if you can fit a Ford V8 into a Miata, you can probably fit just about anything else.

Should it be done? I guess that depends on how much $$$$$ you're willing to put out to do it. We have a local club member whose dad is an auto tech teacher - he'd know if anyone would. You could pop over to our website (joining the forum is free) and pose the questions - I'm sure Tom would know the answer.

Not unless you can answer that question with some improved performance parameter that matters to you. For me, that would be something other than speed in a straight line.

I've seen too many 357 Chevy V8s stuffed into TR-6s, etc. They're invariably poorly balanced, and suffer from the power train not having been part of the design equations.

I'll search for the pics, but I've seen the results of such a hybrid on the 'Net somewhere. -- The dedicated soul even grafted the S2000 instrument cluster.

However, I agree that the prime issue is whether or not it is a labor of love that one wants to pursue. -- This more than anything is a question of resolving an engineering issue vice a preformance-for-dollar one.

Certainly the best answer so far but I doubt it's sufficient. From the tone of the original post I think Karl North is asking to be talked out of what he already knows is a bad idea... sorry if that's incorrect.

As much as I hate to agree with Pat (the miata dissector), his idea makes allot of sense to me. If Karl's interested in this project, I'm assuming he's got the where-with-all to scrap out the S2k and build the hot rod miata that he yearns for!

What do you say Karl? Would Maggie Mae disown you?

I completely agree, and would like to see those pics if you can find them. I actually kind of like the S2000, it is on my short list of roadsters that I would consider other than the miata. Of course, I would just end up parting it out if I bought one. ;-)

I did find the original source; a co-worker sent me a link to an eBay Auto sale of the hybrid. -- Via Google, I found a few discussion groups (primarily S2k and Drifter sites) that had linked to the same eBay listing. Unfortunately, the link is dead.

I went ahead and purchased both cars. I have a buyer for the S2000 As-Is. I also have a body shop who's VERY interested in the Miata. They have a wrecked one in their shop right now, same year, similar mileage, and the SAME color! Even if I only sell the S2000 I'll clear about $3,700.00 profit from about a days work.

I believe it can be done, the unusual thing about the S2000 engine being that it rotates the opposite way to other Honda engines, i.e. the "right" way. Most Honda engines are designed for FWD and Honda have them spinning anti-clockwise (viewed from no.1 end) to increase traction on the driving wheels through torque reaction of the body. Allegedly.
