Will a Group 26 Battery Fit in a 1964 MGB?

Hi Everyone...

I inherited a nice pull-handle 1964 MGB roadster from my dad in 1998. It has been sitting on the driveway since then, and I'm ready to get it back on the road.

I have read in various newsgroups and web sites that a group 26 battery will fit nicely into the larger of the two battery wells on pre-1977 MGBs. Is this true on the early HN3 MGBs too? I looked up the dimensions of the group 26 battery, and even made a mock up out of cardboard and it appears that the battery wells are both too small.

Any comments are appreciated!

Thanks!

My 1962 will only take the two 6V batteries. Its far less of a problem and keeps the originality of design. The capacity of the 6V er's are that they do last longer when stored/unused.

There is no reason why you can't have the cradle modified to accept the

12v battery - usually they have heaps of corrosion in them - also you will have to modify the cables to take the 12v battery.

Hi Rob...

Thanks for the info!

I'm not wild about modifying the car at all, but I also don't want to pay $80 to $120 for a pair of old-technology 6v batteries!

On the advice of several people on this list, I went today and picked up a group 26 battery ($30 USD for a 36-month "economy" battery plus the $8 core charge at a chain store called Pep Boys) and the group 26 battery does indeed drop right in to the right battery well on my 1964 MGB roadster, and seats down all the way with lots of room left for the cable clamps.

I have left the battery cables as they were with the exception of moving the earth (positive) cable to the right battery well. The next owner can easily restore the battery situation to 2 6v batteries if he or she desires.

I am posting this reply because I just wanted to close out my question to benefit others who look at this thread later on with a similar question (I hate when people don't close topics with a solution!)

Thanks to all those who replied!
