Actually, they easily can be. The crank and rods in the EVO 1-3 are the same as the 93-94 U.S. models. Contrary to popular belief, the EVO motors are nothing magical--it's all about a lighter car, and bolt-ons that make more power out of the setup in that car.


I'd take a "U.S Spec" 6-bolt (90-92) 4G63 over an EVO anyday if we're talking about bare longblocks.


Everyone has these misconceptions that Mitsu made these magical longblocks for the EVOs which isn't true in the least bit.

That's right. Because ALL Mitsu longblocks are magical. ;)

Maybe the 1 to 3 but the 5 has a steel rather than a cast crank + forged rods, these are a lot stronger than standard cranks and rods. Look at the torque figures for the EVO's, and the grp A cars had much more with the same crank.

Though maybe you call these bolt on's.

I'm not seeing what "more torque" has to do with cranks and rods....

The strokes are the same--construction of the rod and crank (materials) won't make a damn bit of difference in power production.

The DSM crank is forged as well, not "cast". So tell me again how the crank is different, and the rods (which once again, are the same according to Mitsu's part #s) are special.

Bolt ons (The ones that make the power difference) are as follows: ECU, Turbo, Exhaust, Injectors, Cams, etc.

The heads on the EVOs flow less than the US DSM heads, the displacement is the same, and the rod/stroke (and against what you're saying--the crank/rods) are all the same. So tell me where an EVO head/longblock are "better" with exception of the 8.8to1 compression pistons (which utilize the 95-DSM 4G63 rings).

I'm missing where the EVO motor is "better" still.
