What kind of engine? I've a 1.8T 20V engine but I'm going to put it to good use :-)

Stuffed full of breakers, and as well as some having general ads, it has a VW specific section.

I've found it very useful on more than one occasion.

Well was thinking of one of those or a 2.3 V5. My head says the 1.8 makes more sense for size, mass & power but I love the V5.

Why bother with the V5, the V6 is a better engine especially if you can find a 3.2 from a TT or R32. What are you putting it into?

There are a couple of VR6s running round in the UK and I like to be diferent for one, never seen an R32 transplant in a polo before but I bet the engines are expensive and they seem to be even larger than the VR6 lumps.

Just remember if you want to use the OEM ECU you'll need the ignition barrel, keys, ECU and instrument binnacle all from the same car. There's a list of engine codes here that you can use to see what version of engine you are offered, there are lots of variations.

SteveH will be round later to say you can't use the OEM ECU.

It's distinctly non-trivial trying to bodge the OEM ECU into another car, and if you're transplanting into anything that isn't a MkIV Golf the steering columns also need 'cut and shutting' - using the top of the

If you're transplanting into a Polo (ISTR you have a Polo anyway) then the advice is to sell it and buy a Golf as that shape Polo bears no similarity to any Golf floorpan, meaning fairly major shell surgery to get the engine in and mounted. You'll also need the 1.8T gearbox.

You pointed out one company that uses the OEM ECU, and they seemed to be a bunch of cowboys who use scotchloc connectors and lots of insulation tape to bodge everything together, and then hand cars back throwing up all sorts of ECU errors.

Everyone else uses a custom ECU because it's so much easier and you don't need to bodge anything.

If you're aiming for 300bhp you'll need a 225bhp engine to start with, which increases costs significantly as well as being much harder to find.

Ooooh no - if you listen to SteveH who is infact the modifying oracle, you'll find that you cannot use the OEM ECU !

I wouldn't touch that Max Power wannabe rag with a 10 foot stick, the last 2 editors have taken it massively down market. There technical articles are seldom correct.

Wrong there's no major surgery required to the shell simply a bolt in subframe.

The 180s from the Skoda Octavia VRs is easily capable of 300 with nothing more than a different charger and chip but you have to be careful as the crank can't take more than about 320 ft lb before it decides the con rods would look better outside the block.

Looks interesting, this is all a little unplanned as my father has knackered the engine and it looks like it's going to cost the best part of a grand to fix so that's a good enough excuse for me to start something silly.
