My truthful answer to all the questions up till this one was "I don't actually know for sure."...

You can get an opinion from Mason, but it will only be an opinion.

If you're in any doubt about the cambelt, then get it changed - it's an easy swap. I paid less than £150 all-in when I got mine done.

What year is it ?

The '97 onwards Mk2 cars are better - there's a whole host of improvements. But then it doesn't really matter if you're only paying £700.

If it's a '97 on, then you get the Klinger HeadGasket as standard, so it'll never go. If it's pre '97 then some of em do pop (hence Rover moving to the Klingers) - but it's no great ballache to get it replaced. Won't be any other damage unless it was overheating *PLENTY* so it's a simple remove, skim, replace.

Honda interior is fine, and Honda electrics are very reliable. Shouldn't be any rust anywhere, but don't worry if there's a bit on the rear arches where they meet the bumper. Engines are bullet-proof (bar the early headgaskets).

Front brakes are a pile of shit - expect the discs to be warped. Couple of hundred quid to get em swapped, cos Honda are DUMBASSES and put them behind the hubs.

The only weak point of the car is the gearbox, but it'll be fine if it's not been abused. It's the diff-bearings that are dodgy - they don't like it when you light up the front wheels - so don't.

I've had mine two years now, and I love it ! Cheap insurance too (try Direct Line) - you can't go wrong really.

That's one thing that would put me off any car. Even if it is a straightforward job with replacing it with a better gasket, I wouldn't trust most mechanics to torque up all the bolts properly, and in the right order, following the procedure for stage 1 torque, then stage 2, then tighten by a specified angle. I'd bet most mechanics just do 'em up as tight as they can, albeit in the diagonally opposite order starting from the inside out.

Then buy a '97 one so it has the better head gasket, its not as if they're expensive is it :)

Didn't realise it would stir up interest... Ok, details as follows:

I'm located near Cannock, Staffordshire (nicely in the middle of the country, 10mins from M6 and 5 from M6T). The car is a 98 R in White Gold, 71k, i'm the second owner. Been serviced regularly, last major at 60k miles. Also had front discs and pads done at same time, not warped yet! Cambelt done at 45k. Avon ZZ3 tyres all round. Apart from servicing, it's only ever needed an exhaust centre section while i've owned it. I've put 38k on it, mostly M54 to Telford and back every day. "Good runner" as they would say, never let me down.

Exterior: nothing major. There are some light scratches on the corner of the rear bumper and one of the side strips (passenger door) is "rippled". It was like that when I got it, and it's never bothered me so i've never had it replaced. I might get the bumper done though.

Interior: spotless, nothing wrong. I've changed the standard tape to a Sony CD unit, I still have the original.

Not sure exactly when i'll sell it, as i'm waiting to hear about my work visa so I can piss off abroad. I'm expecting end of March, i'll let the group know exactly when it's available!

The gearbox is on order with the dealer, I take it ;-)

Each to their own, but that's £150 more than I would give anyone for any sort of Rover 800. (c:

Avoid.

The 800 is a steaming pile of shit.

The Rover 600 is the only chassis that can cope with the T16 Turbo.

On a modern engine, that may well be the case.

But Rover's T16 is very old and very strong. The likelyhood of any head-warping-nonsense etc. is zero. It doesn't care about the bolt order and stuff, as long as they're tight ! It's just an average job for any garage - no specialist knowledge required.

The Pre-'97 cars are very old now anyway - if their gasket was gonna pop, then it already will have !
