B6 Passat 2.0TDI SE Mini Review

First day out 'in the field' with it today.

First impressions:

Fuck me, it goes a bit How do VW get that kind of economy for that kind of performance? The aircon isn't as good as it was in the B5 Passats Pearl black with deep tint windows makes you look like a drug dealer The stereo is pretty damned good for an OEM install Interior space is a bit shit for a car that size

Overall, I love it. However, I can't wait for the renewal cycle to come round so I can order the new 170PS version.

How fast will it go?

It's a turbodiesel.

It's a turbodiesel. And not all that quick either.

No idea. Spent the day in the valleys where 0-80mph performance is more important than top end.

170PS version is supposedly fast as f*ck - something like sub 8 secs to 60mph and 140+ mph.

0-60, on paper, maybe not.

Well, you don't have to wring it's neck to overtake trucks on valleys roads. For everyday driving, it certainly feels quicker than the 156 and my old 1.8T Passat.

They're all important for bragging rights though :-)

You're used to s**te alfas

They don't, it does one at a time.

That's because it's the aircon out of a smaller car, a golf, not a bigger car, the A6.

VW on front and Passat on back makes you look like a rep.

Most OE installs from premium brands are good.

It's a golf. Get over it. At least they don't insist on the longitudonal engine any more to rob you of more interior space.

In absolute terms, it's adequate for the class, nothing wonderful though. The performance will be similar to my '00 Saab 9-3...

Why are you telling *me* this? Don't you know who I am? :)

I've been telling you - and everybody else - this for a long, long time... For the majority of people for the majority of the time, a semi-modern turbodiesel is more than enough and punches above the percieved performance compared to a similar power output petrol.

But the Passat isn't at the top of the class for refinement or performance: if you have the opportunity, have a go in the current shape Honda Accord 2.2 CRDTi (or whatever it's called).

having to go Diesel....Passat might do the job...

saab 9-3 or Audi A3 seem pretty good too.

Any other suggestions?

Bloody hundreds.

What do you want? What's the budget? What are the priorities?

Wow. Hold me back. 0 -60 under 8? I hope you mean 3 seconds under 8.

Depends what you use it for innit. My car gets to 60mph about 25 secs after I start accelerating up the ramp at the very start of the M1, and doesn't go below 70 until I get to J14 (until they put the roadworks in at least).

Merc C220, BMW 320d, Audi A4, Volvo S60. All cracking diesel engines - 320d probably best of the lot to drive though the C220 is close. A4 for the style conscious - current Audis are the best looking ever and the new 2.0 diesel is nippy. S60 great all rounder and the 5 cyl engine so much more characterful than the others. Merc / Volvo best with an autobox, BMW best with a manual. Don't consider the VW/Audi with an auto.

hmmm...

170bhp E220CDi does 8.6 to 62 and 140mph in a bigger, heavier car with an automatic gearbox... I'd hope the Passat was quicker.

Don't VW's have very optimistic fuel computers?
