Back from my Hols and New Clio Mini Review

Just back from a very pleasant, if a little chilly, week in the Algarve.

I shopped around and managed to book a 'Punto or equivalent' with aircon..... a whole 75 quid / week incl. CDW. Nice.

Even better was what they handed to me when I arrived - a brand spanking new (550 kms old) new shape Clio.

No idea what spec. it was, but it appeared to be a 1.2.

Anyway - first impressions were good - nice styling, decently designed interior, although some of the materials were a bit cheap. Lots of toys

- aircon, fuel computer with loads of geeky functions, leccy windows. Nice chunky steering wheel.

Driving - handles well, very little roll for a small French car, but the

1.2 engine was course and gutless.

In summary - nice car, but needs a proper sized engine.

Pics to follow when I can be arsed. Probably tomorrow.

Who was the hire company? We're going to Italy in summer, and I've been quoted £328 for an Alfa 147 (yeah, right) for two weeks.

I went through Lloyds TSB travel services - they booked a car with Thrifty / Bravacar.

Cool. What were the roads like? :-)

The 1.2 is gutless in the previous model as owned by several females I know. Given that the new one weighs a metrick fuckload more, I'm surprised it even moves at all.

They're based on the Golf floorpan.

The roads, that is, not the Clio....

The Algarve is surprisingly good these days - there's been a huge investment of European money, plus the tourist money, meaning there's lots of perfectly smooth, well-surfaced roads with absolutely no traffic on them. It's not unknown to drive down a twisty mountain road for nearly an hour without encountering any more than a farmer on his 125cc s**te old bike.

We're going back in October, but next time we're taking the VFR with us

- ferry from Plymouth to Santander, then down through Spain to the Algarve. Can't wait.
